Photos

Firstly, some photos Henri and Jaana-Mari took of me over the Christmas holiday. I wanted some portfolio photos of myself I could use when I hopefully can start marketing myself as a yoga teacher, and fortunately I have some very talented friends who could help me with that. What I wanted was some serene but approachable portraits that would say "trust me". In this gallery you see some other photos too, as Henri likes to take silly photos of me too - you make the judgement which one of those teachers you'd trust... As always, comments are welcome.

I took some photos I quite like too, today. I love cooking, and I've found that I can and love to express my modest creativity with food photography. I think when I was younger I really liked writing and I imagined that I'd become a writer some day - the thing is, I'm not really creative in a way that I would need to be to write fiction. I'm much better at writing factual text - and the same thing applies with art: I used to paint quite a lot when I was younger, but that too was always realistic more than artistic. With food photography I can kind of combine best of both worlds: I can record the world as I see it, and the little creative talent I do have, I can use to spice the photos up. I think it works very well for me... check out my Creamy Mushroom Soup.

I think the picture number 1 is the best. It's quite possible that it wouldn't work in north america as you aren't really smiling in that one. Still, that is the most trustworthy to my eye.

Number 13 is almost scary in how well it corresponds to the genre. It looks exactly like ALL the dieting/exercise video covers. The muted colored sweater is there. The slightly fakeish smile is there and the photoshopping has made your face too flawless. The picture is such a pure symbol for a health ad, that I have to make an effort to see the person in it.

Thank you Jaakko, it appears we were successful in bringing out the Jane Fonda in kolibri. If I was looking for a yoga teacher, IŽd pick that class.

And the previously promissed hair-update: http://www.blockblock.net/gallery/bb-misc

I was just gonna say - with that endorsement, 13 it is! :)

I absolutely love number 2 - it's wild and fun. However for marketing purposes I'd probably choose number 1 as it is more serious and looks professional. BUT I would use both 1 and 2, as they make a lovely combination: one is serious and professional and the other shows your fun side.

Actually, I really feel 11 is me...

For me, the teacher's attitude and outward personality are important. There's nothing quite as repulsive as the drill sergeant type.

Therefore, if I would be looking for a yoga teacher, I might go for any one of the serious pictures, as the person in all of them looks friendly, easily approachable, healthy, balanced - and humble, somehow.

However, I wouldn't choose pic 04 simply because it leaves the face too shadowed.

And darling Kolibri, I really enjoy your food photography! To me, the pictures are very aesthetic: I especially like the layout and the beautiful dishes. They also really make me miss your cooking! :d

After reading these comments I guess we succeeded. Personally I think it takes the whole set of 6 images to capture this "Yoga-Kolibri" thing, but I would probably use photo 1 for marketing purposes.

Well, with such subject matter, it's easy to make beautiful photos. ;-)
