Saluting the sun
To my surprise this morning, I was actually sore from my 20 minute yoga practice yesterday. Shoulders, biceps and hamstrings especially, from those down dogs. But this kind of muscle soreness feels so good, I can't even remember when I've felt like this before so I couldn't wait to get on to my mat again.
I set the mat up in the sunshine in the study this time, created a new playlist on iTunes for yoga-suitable tunes and did the half an hour short form. Sun was shining (sometimes to my eyes), room was warm and practice flowed. It was fantastic short practice, especially loved Marichyasanas and Warriors, oh and those down dogs - feeling very strong and empowered.
Normally I would think that listening to a music while doing yoga would be distracting - but my problem is that I'm pretty much always multitasking. In a class I listen to the teacher, but when I'm alone my mind starts wondering and music kind of keeps it anchored. I would be interested in hearing from other yogis if you like to listen to music while practicing, and if so, what kind of music (instrumental, vocal?) and if you have any favourites. My list consists mainly from Paul Schwartz, and couple of soundtracks but I find that the music needs to be very slow so that it doesn't dictate the pace.
Posted by kolibri at 12 January 16:25, 2005You know, I used to always listen to music while practicing, and it was just something I was used to. In the last six months I've gotten used to practicing without it, and now when I go to a studio where it's on I find it distracting. I'm sure if I spent some time getting used to it again it wouldn't be a problem. Just another adaptation to the environment....

Hey Cameron!
Music and asana is a love hate thing for me.
I hate the idea of it...but occaisionally find myself doing it...and loving it.
My colleague brought me a 100 word mantra chant from his stay in Taiwan. I have no idea of the origin of the music, though I suspect it's Tibetan.
I love it!

Hi Josie, and thanks for the tips. I've been looking around but it's difficult to choose the studio... I'll check out City Yoga and Flow Yoga, they are both around this area.
