We've had several of those incidents as well. In our previous apartment we ended up having to remove the fire alarm closest to the kitchen in order to do any cooking that involved exhaust. Sometimes they seem to be ultra sensitive, and noisy!

Ultra sensitive, in addition to being badly placed. There's a little kitchenette in the living room, and this thing is basically a meter and a half away from the stove. All the time when we're cooking we're just ready to jump on it if it makes a sound... and the sound it makes is unbelievably loud, it numbs you and gets you adrenaline spiking and makes you jumpy for hours.
