Preparations

Ardha Baddha PadmottanasanaI've just spent an hour doing my ashtanga routine while Henri has been taking photos. I've promised to act as a model for him, and this is all as a preparation for a full set of yoga photos he's been planning for a while. Considering that these are quick snaps taken to see what works and what doesn't there were some gems - like the one there of me doing the Ardha Baddha Padmottanasana (click on the photo to see a bigger version). I like the way the photo is cropped - you can't see the whole of the posture, but he's managed to capture both the posture and my practice.

Forthcoming set will be an interesting one: it will involve waking up in an unholy hour to catch the sunrise - and sun rises around four am in Finland at this time of the year - climbing up to some cliff and stripping all my clothes off. As for the photos - not sure if you ever see any of them, depends on how decent they turn out to be. I have confidence in him though.

that's a very cool picture. A friend of mine took some pictures last year of me overlooking a cliff on the beach..they were my favorite pictures ever. I hope you'll share some of yours :)

Just a quick comment about the photo itself. Not a critique of your asana, but about the composition of the photo. I think the pose and framing of it looks great. But the background shows a bookcase and computer monitor both of which are distracting to the eye. On the other hand, I like how the shot is taken from below, pointing up towards your face. It's an interesting perspective.

Hi Darren - we thought about editing the bookcase out off the photo... but decided against it as now it shows the context of the photo too. I'm not practicing at some special place, as you don't need a special place to do it. I practice yoga at home amongst ordinary things. I like it like that anyway :)

How did you feel being photographed during your practice?

My partner just did a quick lot of the primary series while we were away for the weekend....he had not seen the whole primary series before and I did not prep him much with the exception of giving him a guide book to follow..... I found his presence mostly unintrusive, but at the same time I was aware of him and I am sure my practice was different as a result. Cheers...and look forward to more pix! SMN

It was ok - not quite how it would work if I was alone. With hindsight I should have explained to the photographer what I was going to do: movements happening to my breating, doing all movements to both sides... but he got it pretty quick anyway. Sometimes I had to hold a posture a bit longer than I would normally do to enable him to finish his photo. So agreeing with your experience - he was mostly unintrusive, and it was still a good practice.

Hi Kolibri,
:) You have a good point (re: the context of the photo). Will you let us know when you post the rest of the photos?
